BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- A spokesman for the Ministry ofCommerce (MOC) said Thursday that automobile sales may see slowergrowth this year in spite of better-than expected figures for thefirst quarter.


Auto sales rose 7 percent in the first three months, higher thanthe 5 percent estimate for full year growth, according to data fromthe China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.


MOC spokesman Sun Jiwen said at a press conference that the mainreason behind the strong growth was higher demand, especiallydemand for commercial vehicles on the back of commoditytransportation needs and more infrastructure projects underconstruction.


In the first quarter, commercial vehicle sales surged 22.9percent.


However, sales of passenger vehicles, making up some 85 percentof the total sales, rose just 4.6 percent year-on-year during theperiod, lower than market expectations.


Sun forecast that annual auto sales would remain steady thisyear, but growth would be slower than 2016 due to a high comparisonbase and reduced policy incentives for buying low-emissioncars.


Earlier this month, the MOC unveiled measures to allow companieswith or without authorization from brand owners to sell vehiclesfrom July 1, 2017.


"The move will promote market competition, raise logisticsefficiency and optimize market supply," Sun said.


The preceding measures implemented since 2005 require that allcar dealers secure authorization from brand owners. The old systemhelped safeguard market order, but also gave rise to monopolisticpractices, dragged on competition and made auto partsexpensive.


China had remained the world's largest automobile manufacturerand market for eight consecutive years by 2016, with auto sales up13.7 percent to more than 28 million units last year. Enditem


ADDIS ABABA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) said Friday that it has deployed its election observation mission (AUEOM) to Senegal's legislative elections scheduled for July 30.


Following an invitation from the Senegal's Government, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the AU Commission, has deployed the mission in the West African nation from 22 July to 4 August, according to a statement from the pan-African bloc on Friday.


Led by Catherine Samba-Panza, former Transition President of the Central African Republic (CAR), the mission comprises 40 short-term observers.


The observers are drawn from the AU members of the permanent representatives committee (PRC), the Pan-African parliament, election management bodies, civil society organisations working in the area of democracy, governance and elections in Africa, think tanks, and independent election experts.
