ABIDJAN puma basket heart bianche , Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Africa's economy expects bright future despite suffering some shocks in the outgoing 2014, an expert said in a interview with Xinhua.
"The situation of the African economy in 2014 was characterized by resource mobilization in various countries. There was also widespread launch of major projects. But beyond the good performance, there were some shocks," said Edith Togba, an economics lecturer at Alassane Ouattara University in Bouake, central Cote d'Ivoire, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.
One of the shocks, she pointed out, was the Ebola outbreak which negatively impacted the economy of some countries in the West African region.
"Some countries had to close their borders, hence postponing launch of some projects and economic activities due to Ebola epidemic," the Cote d'Ivoire expert said.
Besides Ebola, Togba said African countries have also been hit by other challenges, including sociopolitical tension, capital flight and corruption.
The economics expert noted that African economy will face major challenges in 2015 as most countries will be holding presidential elections, which scare investors because of the resultant violence in a number of countries.
"The economic prospects for Africa were good, but political upheavals due to elections should be checked," Togba said, urging continental financial institutions such as the African Development Bank to continue funding programs and support governments to accomplish their infrastructural projects.
Driven by strong economic activities, Togba said Africa expects strong good performance in future.
Regarding countries whose economies performed well especially between 2013 and 2014, Togba cited countries like Sierra Leone, Chad and Cote d'Ivoire that respectively recorded 9.6 percent, 9.5 percent and 9.3 percent economic growth.
"We should also remember that Ethiopia's economy grew by close to 9.7 percent and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) recorded 8.8 percent growth," the economist said, noting that the launch of major infrastructural projects had positively impacted many African economies.
She hailed Sino-Africa relations, noting that China had in recent years accomplished several infrastructure projects in African countries such as Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Uganda and Cameroon.
"In Cote d'Ivoire, we could name projects such as Grand-Bassam road, Soubre hydroelectric dam as well as projects in other sectors such as health," she said, noting that "these were fruits of a good cooperation relation."
"Today, China is the second biggest economy after the U.S. My desire is to see its cooperation with Africa reinforced. I would also like to see Africa demonstrating potential and its partnership with China should be beneficial to both parties, basically a win-win partnership," the expert concluded.
